Do Now/Quick Write #2: Write down everything you have learned about writing an essay What is the forgotten element?

Rhetorical Forms What are they? How do they work?

Description Writing that paints a word picture of a person, place, or thing Enables readers to see what you see, hear what you hear, etc. Relies heavily on imagery and sensory details Just south of Delaware Bay, where the land juts out and curves down the east coast, is a small town called Bethany Beach.

Narration Writing that tells a story Relates a sequence of events Organized chronologically When the Fourth of July came, there were fireworks going off all over the neighborhood.

Exemplification A specific illustration of a general idea Explains a general statement by offering one or more specific examples In most respects, Woodstock was a disaster. To begin with, it rained and rained for weeks…

Definition Explains what terms mean The pommel horse is of ancient origin.

Classification Sorting items into categories Explain how a collection of items can be sorted into categories Organized topically I can classify my friends into three categories: those who know what they want out of life, those who don’t have a clue, and those who are searching for goals.

Process A series of steps, presented in chronological order, leading to a particular result. Explains how something works or tell how to do something Once asleep, we go through four distinct stages.

Comparison and Contrast Tells how things are similar or different Examines similarities or differences, or examines both similarities and differences First, it is important to note that men and women regard conversation quite differently.

Cause and Effect Helps readers understand why something happened or is happening Cause is what makes a particular effect happen; an effect is the situation, activity, or behavior that results from a particular cause. Professional athletes are sometimes severely disadvantaged by trainers whose job it is to keep them in action.

Argument Takes a position on a debatable subject Persuades readers that your particular position has merit Uses evidence—facts, examples, experts Recently, it has become clear that Astroturf has caused so many injuries that it should be eliminated from all pro sports stadiums

Identify the Mode and Explain specific Features of this Mode in the Essay Sample A: The British system of education is very different from the American system. First, most American children have only one year of kindergarten, beginning at age five. Under the British system, children begin kindergarten at age four and then go on to another year of more advanced kindergarten called “preparatory” or “prep,” which is comparable to American first grade.

Sample B Now that you are the proud owner of in- lines, you must be sure your skates are fine-tuned and road-worthy, so before you roll, be sure to do the following. First, sit down and place your blades between your legs, wheels facing up. Make certain they are clean so you won’t get dirty. Next, wiggle each wheel, making certain there is no lateral play (side-to-side).

Sample C When I was growing up, my older sister Roxanne ably managed to come up with the greasiest lowlifes for boyfriends, generally characterized by their lip-snarling, cigarette-smoke- trailing, “I-just-might-die-tomorrow- and-I-might-as-well-take-someone-with- me” attitude.

Sample D As a teenager in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was always pretty tolerant of radical clothing styles, but more and more today I find myself asking, “Why do these kids want to look so weird?” For example, I do not understand why a boy would wear a baseball cap backwards on his head. To me, this just looks weird.
