Analysis of the first chapter

The function of the first chapter is to introduce the story and some characters through mystery and suspance.

 Omniscient narrator:He knows all of what characters feel and think.He tells in the third person, sometimes he adopts cahracters’ point of view.  Inner narrator:adopts a character’s point of view or his point of view.  Telling: Is a presentation mediated by the narrator the scene reported is filtered thought his eyes.  Showing: Is the direct presentation of events, the narrator reports the scene and the words said by the characters without saying his comment.  Free indirect speech:there is generally no reporting clause and it retains some features of direct speech (such as direct questions and vocatives).  Direct speech: gives the exact words in the report and uses Quotation marks.

The characterization of Roland is made up from what he is doing.The narrator doesn't initially tell about Roland's felling or thought.She introduces him through what he is doing,through his behaviours and she describes the place that surround him: The London library. The aim of the narrator is to create suspance and curiosity in reader's mind.Subsequently the reader came to know Roland’s fellings: He is glad to read what Ash read. The narrator doesn’t describe his phisically the reader knows only what he feels and what he does. He discovers two letter in Ash’s book :He is curious.He reads twice the letters.So the reader deduct that he is precise. The characterization of Ash is made up from his letters who Roland discovers.With the reading of the letters the reader can understand that he is a fine,measured person but probably he is undecided because he writes two letter and he doesn’t send them.His characterization also his made up from mystery because the narrator gives few details about him so the reader is leaded to discover his personality through what he writes.  Roland:  Ash:
