Bell ringer - journal What is one of your favorite restaurants? How much does it cost on average for one person to eat there? Why is it your favorite restaurant? What are some of the employee positions they hire for? How long does your dining experience take there? What kind of food do they serve? What is the atmosphere or décor of the inside of the restaurant like?

OBJECTIVES Overview of foodservice industry. Define the two segments of the foodservice industry. What types of businesses make up the hospitality industry? Understand the different types of restaurants, and how they are classified. Current trends in Restaurant Industry

Restaurant & foodservice industry Annual sales over $550 billion dollars! More than 945,000 restaurant & food service operators. The industry employs more than 13 million people (9% of workforce). 14.8 Million jobs by 2019 Plenty of Opportunities

Restaurant & foodservice industry 57% of managers are women. 25% of eating-drinking establishments are owned by women. 15% by Asians 8% by Hispanics 4% by African Americans Plenty of Diversity

Commercial Makes up 80% of foodservice industry. Examples: Restaurants Catering Menu chosen by the host of an event Generally food prepared at one location, & delivered to the guest’s location Retail Offer prepared meals that can be eaten in the store, or taken home. Airline & Cruise Ships Cruise ships offer dining 24/7, casual dining to buffets Airlines often offer small snacks, or meals on longer flights.

Theme Restaurants The concept of the restaurant takes priority over everything else, influencing the architecture, food, music, and overall 'feel' of the restaurant. The food usually takes a backseat to the presentation of the theme These restaurants often attract customers solely on the premise of the theme itself.

Rainforest Cafe restaurant is designed to depict some features of a rainforest, including plant growth, mist, waterfalls, and animatronics figures of rainforest animals, including elephants, frogs, gorillas, jaguars, and tigers.
