Hohensalzburg Fortress was built in 1077 by archbishop Gebhard and enlarged by archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach ( ). The fortress' interior was richly decorated: intricate Gothic woodcarving ornamental paintings decorate the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber. The victory of the French troops led by Napoleon ( ) occupied Salzburg without any resistance.

The history of the fortress can be traced back to Stone Age, the Middle Ages and the baroque. The fortress' symbol is the lion. It is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. The fortress served as military barracks and a prison. It has always remained undefeated by enemy troops. Today it is open to the public all year long artists from around the world meet here for courses at the International Summer Academy.
