Solutions Manual For Rullende café

About the hold ups HOLD-UPs are creativity workshops during which 10 to 15 SenseMakers gather to solve the challenge of a social entrepreneur. They are organized by members of MakeSense, a worldwide community of volunteers in 86 cities around the globe,. They give their time & skills to help Social Entrepreneurs have a better impact by finding solutions to their problems. Post your challenge on or choose the one you would like to solve!

This manual includes the solutions imagined by the participants to the hold up done together.  Day of the hold up: 15/10/2014  Location of the hold up: CB2, Cambridge  Person who facilitated it: Helene Bourgeois/ Elsa de Carné Challenge: How to expand the Rullende Cafe concept? Objectives: - Having a clear membership process so people know how to get involved - Having another cafe rolling around - Get 5 people committed to run a Rullende café within two months Constraints: -The winter in Oslo is very long and cold so it has to be developed when the weather is warmer. - It’s a voluntary job. - The Coffee Stand needs to be made by the community.

 about the entrepreneur: Erlend Hanssen Sjåvik is a student of urban planning and member of the artist collective Organisme.  the challenge: They want to get more people involved in enjoying the city, by using their or people’s own cafe. Since they are busy people and can't roll as much as they want, they wish people with some time on their hand and a good spirits, using their concept so it can live on.  the concept solutions At the beginning, the idea was to find a way to help people having a coffee in their favorite place. It started last year in Oslo, Erlend and some friends have since rolled in Oslo when they have time. During the last year, they have rolled around between times, mostly weekends. Since they are students or have jobs (and due to a long winter in the north, they have not rolled the entire year). The main object of the rolling cafe is to take part in the urban fabric by activating places, asking people why they walk where they walk, why they live here, where they live, if they use their neighborhood, it’s basically a urban project. They think that they need to use streets in a different way. More room for pedestrians and bicycles. Streets are not only space for transportation and cars, but also where we meet, interact with and should spend time. The concept is that the customer pays what he wants for a cup of coffee/tea/buns/cookies and nominate a charity organisation he wants to support. At the end of the day, they count the votes and the nominees, and the organisation with the most votes gets the money. Donating away the money is just a convenient way to get rid of a problem, because we don't run a business, but more a kind of a rolling work shop to get people aware of their environment, the people around them. The model and name is open for everyone as long as the concept is followed. So basically rolling around, talking to people, and donate all the money to charity after a good day. They don't want to create a business model.

Entrepreneur & Challenge

About Rullende cafe They roll around in Oslo with a mobile cafe. People donate what they want for a coffee, tea or snacks and vote which charity they think will get the money collected! Challenge : How to expand the Rullende café concept Erlend Hanssen Sjåvik is the main entrepreneur for this project. Contact him by mail:

45 minx10 concepts Solutions

1. Get the community involved into the project Target: - Involve « lonely » people in « social virtuous circle » (customers became actors) Attract people who are becoming regular customers maybe with free hugs Everyone can join the Rullende cafe so it’s good to have regular customer but it’s important to always have new people as well. Communication: - Use social network like Instagram because if you take pictures into several places of the city, you can attract more people. We’ll create a partnership between the different Rullende Cafe in Bordeaux and in Stockholm to make the communities interacting to grow and be alive. - Choose a spot as a way of keeping the community involved. You can do a vote for instance in Facebook, website or in Twitter. It’s a way of maintaining the community alive. - Maintain the coffee shop clean and attractive: you can find people wanting to decorate it, paint it, and play music around. Pictures can be displayed in coffees. It’s a kind of artistic project. People around can bring their talents.

2. Neiboorhood launching event and partnership with a fair trade coffee seller organisation. To advertise how we’re going to have people involved in the project, we’re going to organise a launching event (barbecue or dinner) maybe in the summer because the peak season of the Rullende cafe’s activity should be in Spring or autumn (when people like to have a coffee because it’s not to hot or too cold). It would be an event promoting in neighbourhood shops to have everybody from the community involved. It’s good to tell people that the money is going to charity: fair trade suppliers of coffee so we can advertise that they are helping international organisation. Link between the organisation purpose and their activity. « You’ll give to sustainable coffee producer ». Partnership between the Rullende cafe and a fair trade coffee producer. Open price, open source, open community. We have to be really clear about the concept. Everybody is welcomed to bring ideas and friends. After this event, we would use the social networks to promote the event with the people from the community we already met. Spread the world as much as possible in the community.
