 IWBAT analyze Vietnam songs  IWBAT describe the end of the Cold War

 After the US exits Vietnam, the North easily defeats the South and unifies the country.

 Built to separate E. Germany from W. Germany  Prevented brain drain

 96 miles long  12 feet tall  302 watch towers

 November 9, 1989 is seen as the start  It took months for the wall to come down completely

 Became leader of USSR  Implemented changes to fix problems

 “Economic restructuring”  In 1986, Gorbachev made changes to revive the Soviet economy.  Local managers gained greater authority over their farms and factories, and people were allowed to open small private business.  Gorbachev’s goal was not to throw out communism, but to make the system more efficient and productive.

 “Openness”  He encouraged Soviet citizens to discuss ways to improve their society.  Allowed churches to open.  Released political prisoners from jail and allowed the publication of books by previously banned authors.

 Reporters actively investigated social problems and openly criticized government officials.  Many vocalized the problems of the old Soviet Union. Angry consumers protested  that they had to stand in long lines to buy food, soap and other basics because the  Soviet system could not make enough to keep people supplied.
