Ethics  What is Ethics?  What is your Definition?

Ethics Ethics is a Code of Values which Guides our Choices and Actions and Determines the Purpose and Course of our Lives. Michael Josephson Derived from Ayn Rand

Character Teaching Child Teaching Child Fourth of July - Fireworks Fourth of July - Fireworks Disney Vacation - Park Admission Disney Vacation - Park Admission Drivers Education Drivers Education Values are Primarily Caught Not Taught !!! Values are Primarily Caught Not Taught !!!

Character It’s Okay Son…… Everybody Does It!! It’s Okay Son…… Everybody Does It!! Why do Police Officers sometimes act unethically? Why do Police Officers sometimes act unethically? It is Race Problem - Human Race!! It is Race Problem - Human Race!! They are human and are exposed to the same temptations and shortcomings as other human beings……. They are human and are exposed to the same temptations and shortcomings as other human beings…….

Character  Individuals who have been exposed primarily to bad examples seldom develop good character.  True or False?  How does ones character have influence on their law enforcement career?

Character  Examples:  Domestic Violence Cycle  Drug Abuse  Alcoholism  Criminal Behavior

Character - Police  Are Police Held to a Higher Standard?  Should They Be?  Laws & Constitutions  L.E. Code of Ethics  Sworn Oath of Office  Whether we Agree/Disagree ~ Like it or Not - Police ARE Held to a Higher Standard.

Ethics in Public Service Higher Standards & Double Standards Edwin J. Delattre When a person voluntarily accepts a position of public trust, he takes on new obligations. If he does not want to live up to them, he is free to decline the job. Not only is this fair demand; granting authority without expecting public servants to live up to it would unfair to everyone they are expected to serve. Raise the salaries if jobs merit higher pay but not in expectation of buying integrity. Nobody sells that. People who have it give it for free.

Mission of the Police  Are Expectations of the Public to Much?  Solve my problem(s)  Get Johnny to go to school  Stop the speeders in my area - but not me  Why are you not out catching the real criminals?

Public Trust Community View of the Agency Good or Bad? Do They Trust the Police? Support the Police?

Public Trust  Public Trust ~ Accountability  Citizens, having given up the right to enforce their rights, have made police work a public trust and expect that trust to be honored in the conduct of police business.

Public Trust ~ Trust/Restraint ~ Appropriate Level of Force ~ Trust/Corruption ~ Police Badge not used for Personal Gain You can use the badge two ways…….

Next Week Police Discretion & Public Corruption
