Home Control and Monitoring for Ambient Assisted Living Project Description and Demonstration Martin Moghadam – Kalle Grafström – Kristoffer Ravnholt

Introduction to the Problem Domain Project Justification Project Goals and Value Ideal Situation Stakeholder Conflicts Rules and Regulation State of the Art Project Purpose/Scope Prototype Demonstration Further Development

Introduction to the Problem Domain The Current Situation Limited Resources Why is Change Needed? Quality of Life Better use of Resources Who are the Beneficiaries of the Change? The Elderly The Home Care Staff

Project Justification Home Control Could Improve Ambient Assisted Living Reduces the necessity of multiple visits Increases connectivity, and proves continues line of communication between the elderly and the home care staff Link between further situation, Effect Goals Aiding home care staff Improve life quality for elderly and also give them a comfort if something should happen to them at home an alert will be sent out to the home-care staff

Project Goals and Value Project Goals: Making home control more suited and accessible for assisted living. Facilitating an monitored environment in assisted living homes. Increasing the usage of home control systems by spreading it through assisted living. Provide an alert system if something is out of the normal behavior of the elder Value: Optimize Resources Home care staff Less trips and less burdens Elderly Feel more comfortable and secure

Ideal Situation Constant Automated Computer Aided Monitoring More aids to help the elderly to be more independent of help from home-care staff and other aiding staff

Stakeholder Conflicts The elderly want to be as independent as possible Monitoring of elderly invades their privacy If the elder agrees to home automation, he or she doesn’t want to move to a new home just to get the aids installed.

Rules and Regulation The home electronic installation needs to comply to European standards. BSI BS EN 50xxx-x and 60xxx-x. The laws about monitoring and AAL of elders are “Loven om Magtanvendelse” and it has just been changed. Now the elder needs to actively oppose an installation of an aid system

Project Purpose/Scope The prototype demonstrates: The basic essential feature needed for; Home Control for Ambient Assisted Living The prove the possible benefits of home control The project scope is for one household. Only the IntelliHome with ZCommand. Though it would be more appropriate to do this for a number of households or extending the project to include large buildings, but the limited supply of hardware and time constraints this project is limited to include only one household.

Conclusion Aids to help the home-care staff are a relevant issue, because of the above mentioned problem domain The improved security for the elders without doing to much of intrusion into their daily life is also important issue A further development of the prototype can further optimize the home-care staffs work and also improve a comfort for both elder and elder relatives The cost of installing a monitoring and home control system will always be an issue that is hard to solve. Who will pay for the installation? If it is a system that can be used for other things than just aid the elderly or handicapped, the government will only pay for

Questions? ambient 1.Encompassing on all sides; surrounding; encircling; enveloping. A cup of tea eventually cools to the ambient temperature. “Ambient Intelligence” represents an intelligent environment of computing nodes. Definition by Wiktionary

Main Focus Make it easier for the home-care staff to monitor the household of elderly people. Remotely control of the household of the elderly. i.e. temperature control, blinds, vacuum cleaners etc. Rule based behaviour of households. Alerts if anomalies to the rules occur. Web interface for home carer Smartphone/Internet device interface for home care Alert feature for anomalies (SMS, ) GPS feature to locate home carer. This is used to change queue for the home carer that is closest to the household that generate an anomaly alert.

Example Scenarios An elder complain about that he/she thinks it is to hot/cold in their home. Instead of going out to the elder the home-care staff can change the temperature during her other working tasks through logging in to a web-page and change the temperature in the elders household. In the middle of the night an elder starts to wander around in the dark when he/she should be asleep, an alert is generated from their home server to a home-care personnel in the vicinity. The sensors detecting movement could be a movement sensor or a sensor in the bed that detects movement. A direct link to the elders’ household is included in the SMS.

Example Scenarios The home-carer forgets to lock the door when she leaves an elders home, the system alerts the home-carer with a SMS, the home-carer logs in on her smartphone and locks the door through the web browser. The link to the particular household is included in the SMS so that the home-carer can click directly on it. The home-carer gets an alarm SMS if the elder haven't moved from the bed in the morning if that is what she normally do. The system can add a fall down detector to the home system, detecting if the elderly has fallen. Alerting the assisted living personal and logging the information. Other health sensors can also be added.
