Color Association, Symbolism and Popular Culture

Light vs. Dark

Does the symbolism of “Light” and “Dark” colors mean the same thing in all cultures?

Dia De Los Muertos

What about in Disney? Do you think there is deeper symbolism being used in color and character usage in Disney movies? Some say no, but there are critics that feel differently…

Is Color Racist? The Lion King

“At the time of The Lion King's release, some were quick to point out its racist overtones, namely that the evil hyena triumvirate is voiced by Hispanic and Black actors.” “ attempts to color-code evil for the film's target audience” - Ed Slant Magazine

What is your opinion?

Aladdin

“The Aladdin character in that movie portrays “bad” Arabs with thick foreign accents while Anglicized Jasmine and Aladdin speak in standard Americanized English” (Giroux, 1995). Aladdin looks and sounds like a fresh- faced American boy. (Giroux, 1995). “I come from a land…where they cut off your ears if they don’t like your face. It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home” (Maio, 1999).

The Crows In Dumbo? The crows are said to be “stereotypical representations of African- Americans" at the time the movie came out.

Are Critics of Disney going overboard? Or is there some truth to what we are discussing?

The Lord of The Rings

‘The Haradrim are more recognizable. They are garbed in turbans and flowing crimson robes. They ride giant elephants. They resemble nothing other than North African or Middle Eastern tribesmen. A recently released "Towers" companion book, "The Lord of the Rings: Creatures," calls the Haradrim "exotic outlanders" whose costumes "were inspired by the twelfth-century Saracen warriors of the Middle East." The Saracens were Islamic soldiers who battled Christian invaders during the Crusades.’ - David Ibata, Chicago Tribune ‘The "good guys" include the human Dunedain, Rohirrim and Gondorians. All fair-skinned, mostly blond and mostly blue-eyed.’ - David Ibata, Chicago Tribune
