Bullying

Definition of Bullying # repeated occurrences, # on purpose, # intended to harm another # physically or mentally. Bullying is a problem that affects ALL

Types of Bullying Physical bullying Aggressive Bodily acts Physical attacks (hitting, kicking, beating up, pushing, spitting) Verbal bullying Subtle Verbal language (teasing, mocking, name calling, verbal humiliation, verbal intimidation, threats) Social bullying Hurting someone’s reputation Hurting a relationship (gossip, rumour spreading, embarrassment, alienation or exclusion from the group, and/or setting the other up to take the blame) Cyber-bullying Harassment Communication devices (threaten, hurt, single out, embarrass, spread rumours, post pictures/video, and/or reveal secrets about others)

Bullying and Gender Boys tend to be *physically aggressive *more accepting of bullying than girls *more likely to both bully and be bullied than girls Girls tend to *bully other girls indirectly through peer groups *share hurtful information with others rather than bully directly

Sad because the bullying continues because they are rewarded by their peers for their actions Also peers unintentionally help bullies to continue their behaviour because children expect their peers to behave in the same way they always do - for bullies to continue bullying and for victims to continue on the path of victimization.
