GIVING CAN BE SELFISH DISCUSSION ON THE MEANING OF BEING A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR Shangri-la Ecotourism Forum 2011

Social entrepreneurship Making money with minimum negative impact on environment and positive impact on the people you work with

Working with staff  Proper wages, benefits and insurance for staff are important  Give opportunities to staff but also expect staff to give input, take responsibility and be motivated so your company can grow and be successful.  If staff do not perform it is damaging to your company and the other people that depend on your company (including the community)

Working with local communities  If you want to support projects in the local community you can choose to support the work of a local NGO or community project (financially or otherwise). They have the experience, knowledge and are set up to run and monitor projects properly.

Working with the community  If you decide to start your own project, please create long term sustainability (better start small and progress slowly than start a big project and get lost in it and/or run out of time, energy and financial means to support your project)  Work together with mutual benefits (discuss with local community their needs and also express your needs for your tourism products and operations, then see how you can balance both)  Managing expectations from both sides (an entrepreneur is not the government or NGO/INGO: be clear in your communication what you can and cannot do from the beginning to avoid problems later)

Working with guests  Managing generosity: give good options for clients to donate money to, and discourage harmful donations (pens, sweets, money, donations without monitoring)  Voluntourism: great opportunity but needs to be set up properly, with constant supervision and guidance to avoid negative impacts and clear benefits for both the community and the volunteers. Transparency is also a very important issue
