Topic- Equivalent Fractions PARTS AND WHOLES Topic- Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions 1/2 2/4 3/6 4/8 5/10 What do we observe ?

Such fractions are called equivalent ( or equal ) fractions . We observe that each strip represents the same part of the whole strip and the corresponding fractions are : 3/6 4/8 2/4 Such fractions are called equivalent ( or equal ) fractions . 5/10 1/2

Here is a collection of 12 circles . 1/3 (a) (b) 2/6 What D0 we 0bserve ? (c) 4/12

The corresponding fraction are : Shaded portion indicate the same part (i,e. , 4 circle ) of the given collection of 12 circles. The corresponding fraction are : 1/3 2/6 4/12 These are also called equivalent fraction

Definition:- Two or more fraction representing the same part of a whole or same number of a collection are called Equivalent fraction 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 = 8/16 = 3/6 = 5/10 = 10/20 …………… 1/3 =2/6 = 4/12 = 8/24 =3/9 =5/15 =6/18 …………. Corresponding to a given fraction ,we can obtain as many equivalent fraction fractions as we wish .

To test whether two given fraction are equivalent fraction or Not 5/8 and 30/48 The given fraction are 5/8 and 30/48 5 _ 30 _ By cross multiplication, we have 8 48 5× 48 =240 and 8×30 = 240 So, 5×48 =8×30, Hence,5/8 and 30/48 are equivalent fractions If two fractions are equivalent, the product of numerator of the first and denominator of the second is equal to the product of the denominator of the first and numerator of the second .

Other Example 3 _ 6 _ We get 5×6 = 30 and 3×10 = 30. (a) 5 10 So, 3/5 =6/10 Given fraction is equivalent 3 18 _ _ We get 3×60 =180 and 10×18=180 . (b) 60 10 So,3/10 =18/60 Given fraction is equivalent _ 3 4 _ (c) 11 We get 3×12 = 36 and 11×4 = 44 . 12 So, 3/11 ≠ 4/12 Given fraction is not equivalent.
