FCAT Parent Night Informational Session for Third Grade Parents

What will the FCAT 2.0 be like? Reading Benchmarks Format Responses Types of Questions

8 Tested Benchmarks for Reading LA.A The reader will use strategies to determine the meaning of words in context, including prefixes, suffixes, root words, multiple-meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and word relationships to increase vocabulary.

LA.A The reader will determine main idea, identify the theme of a story, determine relevant supporting details and facts, arrange events in chronological order (First, Next, Last), and make inferences based upon prior knowledge. LA.A The reader will identify the authors purpose for writing (often to persuade, inform or entertain).

LA.A The reader will recognize the use of compare and contrast in text. (How are the characters similar? How are they different?) LA.A The reader will read and organize a variety of text/ reference materials including maps, charts and photos, and will organize the information for a variety of purposes.

LA.E The reader will understand plot development and conflict resolution in fiction. (How was the problem solved?) LA.E The reader will recognize similarities and differences (Compare & Contrast) among the characters, settings, and events presented in various forms of text.

and last, but not least……… LA.E The reader will recognize cause and effect relationships in literary texts.

Math Strands Tested Number Sense, Concepts, and Operations (+, -, x, divide) Geometry and Spatial Sense Data Analysis and Probability Measurement (customary and metric) Algebraic Thinking

Format, Responses and Types of Questions MULTIPLE CHOICE Read all choices before answering Use Process of Elimination if unsure Make the connection between answers and reading passage (underlining key words or passages) Work Math problems out on space provided

Student Promotion Requirements Meet both Criteria: Report Card Grades- Pass all Subjects FCAT Reading-Level 2 or higher Plus meet 2 out of 4 Indicators: 1. 75% of Grade Level Benchmarks: Language Arts (70% Mastery) 2. 75% of Grade Level Benchmarks: Math (70% Mastery) 3. 75% of Grade Level Benchmarks: Science (70% Mastery) 4. Reading Portfolio (3.0 or higher) *If student does not pass the Reading portion of the FCAT, they must meet the other requirements and pass by completing a mastery benchmark portfolio. If not,the studen has the option to attend Summer Reading Camp and take the SAT test at the end of camp.*

Student Promotion Requirements continued… *The students MUST pass the Reading portion of the FCAT test. The scoring levels range from a level 1 to a level 5, 1 being the lowest score and 5 being the highest. A student MUST score, at minimum, a level 2 to be considered for promotion to the next grade level. *If a student does not pass the Reading portion of the FCAT, they must meet the other requirements and complete a mastery benchmark portfolio of 80% or higher. * The student also has the opportunity to attend a lake County Summer Reading Camp and take the SAT test at the end of camp.* If the student passes the SAT test, the student may be promoted to the next grade level.

What Can You Do at Home With Your Child? Guided Reading (encourage AR reading and read alouds to test comprehension skills) Read a variety of text (newspaper, recipes, poems, instructions, etc.) Vocabulary Development (Review Robust Vocabulary Words) Review Math Study Guide Daily!! Visit educational websites (FCAT Explorer, Brainchild, Star Fall, etc.)

The Days Leading up to FCAT…… Create a positive environment Rest and encourage a consistent bedtime Nutritious meals including breakfast Dress appropriately for the current weather conditions Give medication (if any is necessary)

*3 rd Grade FCAT Testing Dates:* *Monday, April 16th- Session 1 (70 minutes) – Reading only *Tuesday, April 17th- Session 2 (70 minutes) – Reading only *Wednesday, April 18th- Sessions 3 (70 minutes) Math only *Thursday, April 19th- Sessions 4 (70 minutes) Math only *Friday, April 20th & Monday, April 23rd-* FCAT make-up days
