IPv6 Rapid Deployment in Taiwan Academic Network (TANet) Authors: Po-Kang Chen Chia-Wen Lu Quincy Wu 1

Outline Introduction – IPv4 exhaustion – Transition mechanisms Related Work – 6to4 Tunnel – 6RD Tunnel Implementation – Architecture – Customer Edge – Border Relay Conclusion & Future Work 2

Introduction There is no Unallocated IPv4 address at IANA since February 3rd In other words. There will be lots of device needs to use pure IPv6 to connect to the Internet in the future. 3

Introduction(cont.) The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 take times. During this period, the different networks, IPv4s and IPv6s, need to communicate with each other. 4 IPv6IPv4

Introduction(cont.) The transition mechanisms include three major categories: – Dual-stack – Translation – Tunneling – 6to4 tunnel, 6RD tunnel, etc. 5

Related Work 6to4 Tunnel Feature 6to4 Prefix : 2002 : Public IPv4 address ::\48 6 IPv4 IPv6 2001:0DB8::1 Host H2 6to4 host Host H1 6to4 Relay Router Router R

Related Work(cont.) 7 IPv4 IPv6 2001:0DB8::1 Host H2 6to4 host Host H1 6to4 host Host H3 6to4 Relay Router Router R to4 Tunnel Disadvantage (From ISPs view)

Related Work(cont.) 6RD Tunnel Prefix: Same as the ISPs Public IPv4 address: Use on the Customer Edge IPv6 IPv4 IPv6 Customer Edge Border Relay 2001:55c::/32 8

Related Work(cont.) 6to4 and 6RD Comparison 6to46RD Prefix2002::/16Same as ISP ScaleBoundedUnbounded NATNot AllowedAllow 9

Implementation Implementation architecture 10 IPv6 IPv4 IPv6 ASUS RT-N16 (CE) Cisco 2811 (BR) 6RD host

Implementation(cont.) CE – Upgrade the RT-N16 firmware from DD-WRT – Configure the router to advertise the ISP prefix We first build the tunnel with Comcast’s BR 11

Implementation(cont.) Cisco 2811 – Upgrade the IOS to version 15.1(3)T1 with 6RD support – Configure the tunnel informations 12

Conclusion & Future Work Conclusion – Unfortunately we encountered some unknown problems so that there is no 6RD traffic between our CE and BR. – As soon as we overcome the problem, the 6RD implementation in TANet will be completed. Future Work – Security Issue – Traffic Measuring and Analyzing 13
