Day of the Dead  The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2

The tradition  Day of the Dead Altars are built during Dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead) to remember the lives of those who have passed. They are often quite beautiful creations, constructed with love and care. Creating these altars is one of the most important traditions during Day of the Dead in Mexico and in Mexican American communities around the globe.

Objects relating to the dead  The main purpose of a day of the dead altar is to honor the dead and to help you remember and appreciate their life. It's common, therefore, to decorate an altar with the dead's former possessions and with objects that symbolize things they valued, owned or found meaningful.

My altar For my Grandma, Eloise

Candles  Candles are lit to welcome the spirits back to their altars. I have three candles on my altar

Water  Souls are thirsty after their long journey from the Other Side, so they appreciate a glass of water when they arrive.

Salt  Salt represents the continuance of life

Photos of the dead  A framed photo of the dead person to who the altar is dedicated to is on most altars. A picture of my grandma and grandpa

Items that once belonged to the dead  Keepsakes, souvenirs and other things the dead person enjoyed in life are laid out on the altar. This is a picture of a small turtle my grandma gave me before she passed away.

Toiletries  The spirit will want to freshen up after they reach the altar, so toiletries are always appreciated, along with a small towel.

Symbol’s of the dead’s talents Most people on altars put things related to the dead persons favorite activity. Like if a Grandpa liked golfing someone would put a golf club or tee or golf balls. This is a teddy bear my grandma knitted for me when I was born.

Altars can be as simple as this

To as complicated and fancy as this
