Timeline of Terrorist Attacks By: Dounia Balan Period 3

December 17, 1973 Terrorist attack at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport. Thirty four people died and many of the dead and injured were employees, families, friends, and relatives visiting for Christmas.

May 12-15, 1974 This day is called the Ma’alot Massacre because these terrorist actually went around and killed people. On the night of May 12-13, these Palestinian terrorists jumped the border to Lebanon. On May 15, the squad (police) attacked a pickup truck and found one dead woman and three wounded women. Then at 3:30 in the morning, the terrorists broke into the Cohen residence in Ma'alot and killed the entire family. From the Cohen residence, the terrorist squad continued on to the "Meir Nativ” school, broke inside, and assembled all 105 students and 10 teachers of a religious high school. In all, a total of 22 children and 3 adults were killed and 68 were wounded.

March 6, 1975 These terrorists were armed with light weapons, grenades and various explosives, landed ashore while shooting at civilians and throwing grenades, and attempted to break into a movie theater. When that didn’t work, they just went down the street and took over the Hotel Savoy

November 4, 1979 52 citizens were taken into hostage for 444days when students stormed the U.S Embassy in Tehran. the hostages were finally released after Ronald Reagan's inauguration on Jan. 20, 1981.

April 18, 1983 Sixty-three people were killed including 17 Americans at the U.S Embassy in Beirut. A suicide bomber decided to load a truck full of explosives and ram it on the Embassy

March 16, 1985 Terry Anderson was kidnapped in Lebanon, Beirut. His captors were a group of Hezbollah Shiite Muslims and was held captive for six years and 9 months. That would be 29,545 days. He was released on December 4, 1991 and he has forgiven his captors.

June 14, 1985 TWA flight 847 was hijacked on route from Rome to Athens and was forced to land in Beirut Lebanon. Hijackers held the plane for 17 days for the demand of 700 fellow Shiite Muslim prisoners and Kuwait 17. When demands were not met, they killed a U.S navy diver and dumped his body on the airport tarmac. His name was Robert Stethem. The 2 hijackers tortured and beat Stethem for hours and hours but he took it because he thought if someone was to die on the plane, it would be him.

December 21, 1988 A Pan American Jumbo jet that was suppose to fly from London To New York, crashed into the town on Lockerbie Scotland. 259 passengers died and 11 more on the ground.

February 26, 1993 Terrorist put truck bomb under the WTC with intentions of collapsing both towers. six people died and over 1,00 people injured

June 25, 1996 a terrorist truck bomb exploded outside the northern perimeter of Khobar Towers, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The Downing Task Force estimated that the bomb was between 3,000 and 8,000 pounds, most likely about 5,000 pounds. Nineteen fatalities and an estimation of 500 US wounded.

September 11, 2001 Islamic hijackers steer two planes packed with fuel and passengers into the World Trade Center, killing hundreds on impact and eventually killing thousands when the towers collapsed. At least 200 are seriously injured.

August 6, 2003 Sergio Vieira de Mello, (the top UN envoy) was killed when terrorists blew up the UN headquarters in Baghdad, killing at least 14 others and injuring a lot more

July 11, 2006 At least 160 people died today due to seven explosions tore through packed commuter trains in Mumbai. The attack was suspected to be caused by bombs in choreographed terrorist attacks on different trains at separate sites.

June 29, 2007 There was two hidden Mercedes and there were bombs in side them in Central London's crowded theater district. Police said that if the explosives had detonated, they could have killed or injured hundreds of people.

December 26, 2009 Mr. Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, had an object that was melting and smoking, in his pocket. The purpose of this object was to blow up the airplane. There were 289 passengers on the plane and Mr. Schuringa, helped take this thing off of the man while restraining the suspect. Flight attendants ran up with fire extinguishers, killed the flames and helped Mr. Schuringa walk Mr. Abdulmutallab to first class, where he was stripped, searched and locked in handcuffs.

January 24, 2010 A terrorist attack on the main airport in Russian capital Moscow killed more than 20 people and injured over 100 others. A suicide-bomber detonated an explosive device inside the international baggage-claim area.

July 22, 2011 A massive bomb blast hit government buildings in the Norwegian capital Oslo, killing at least seven people and injuring others. Then a shooting occurred a couple of hours after a youth center

Terrorism Reflection 3 Things How Terry Anderson survived for 29,545 days in captivity. I don’t’ think I would be able to. Plus the people who took him weren’t even that serious about it. Or at least it seemed like it. Of course 9/11 is a memorable event. I won’t forget it especially what I learned so far this year about it.] How they tortured Stethem for hours before killing him. He took it and accepted the fact that if someone had to die, it would have to be him.  2things I would like to learn more about Terry Anderson, and his days held captive. Even when he got rescued, he still didn’t hold a grudge and forgave. I would also like to learn about Robert Stethem because e was strong and stayed strong through out the whole situation. 1thing Try getting along and try to communicate with them. Maybe try to understand from their point of view and see if we could fix thing or patch things up.
