Environmental Public Health Our Vision Healthy People in Healthy Environments Healthy People in Healthy Environments

What do we do? Change behavior (inspire, train, educate) Help - provide technical assistance, health consultation, manage risk Issue permits to construct, operate or work Inspect to assure compliance Investigate disease outbreaks Involve those we regulate (Adv Comm, meetings) Enforce the laws and regulations Healthy People in Healthy Environments

What do we do? Healthy People in Healthy Environments 8,760 hours of monitoring 111 permits issued 111 emission inventories 319 inspections 2 major enforcement actions 1 Environmental Award given

The air and us… Our lungs inhale over 2,000 gallons of air per day. We take about 23,000 breaths per day. The surface area inside our lungs is about the same as a tennis court.

The air and us… Our lungs are the only internal organs that are directly exposed to the environment. A person can live without: –food for about 30 days, –water for about 3 days, –air about 3 minutes !

Health Effects of Air Pollution Ozone -Breathing difficulty -Asthma exacerbation -Reduced lung function -Coughing, nose and throat irritation -Chest pain -Increased risk of respiratory illness Particulate Matter (PM2.5) -Heart attack -Angina -Asthma exacerbation -Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease aggravation -Reduced lung function -Missed work and school

How do we know how if our air is safe? We monitor for Ozone, CO, & PM. NAAQS National Ambient Air Quality Standards

EPA’s Air Quality Index A simple tool that measures the overall quality of air Moderate and below = within NAAQS Overall, Lincoln has good air quality Rated in top 20 on Ozone Particulate matter remains a concern

Goal = 90% Good 90%
