Southeastern Universities Research Association Jerry Draayer, SURA President Board of Trustees Meeting November 4 & 5, 2004 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Jefferson Laboratory (JLab)  Strong Science Program - 12 GeV Upgrade - CD0 ‘Signed’ on 4/1/2004 Chief Scientist, Tony Thomas on JLab Team FEL Deemed a ‘Significant Facility’ by DOE  SURA / JLab Challenges - DOE Competition of the JLab Contract Improvement of JLab’s Safety Record Near (FY05/06) & Long Term Support

JLab - A Going / Growing ‘Concern’ Fully operational DOE particle accelerator Cutting-edge basic nuclear physics research 6 GeV electron accelerator (12 GeV coming!) ~$100 million annual budget, ~700 employees ~1200 scientists/year, ~70% SURA members Most powerful FEL in world / DoD supported Possible US Center for SRF / ERL technology

IT Program Highlights  SURA-AT&T GridFiber Deployments in Progress NLR, LONI, LEARN, NERO, PNWGP  Atlantic Wave Initiative  Regional HPC/Grid Planning Effort  NMI Testbed and Testbed Grid  SGA engagement and renewed e-corridors resolution  Grids Tech Workshop Jan ’05 with industry sponsors  Computational Chem Workshop May ‘05

AT&T Fiber SURA - NLR Collaboration Update The April ‘04 resolution of the SURA Board, our access to AT&T dark fiber and the continuing efforts of SURA and the SURA IT community have resulted in the reshaping of the National LambdaRail in a way that is very advantageous to the SURA region and to the nation as a whole. SURA’s work with Louisiana (LONI) and Oklahoma (OneNet) has resulted in these states’ participation as full members of the National LambdaRail, increasing the number of SURA states with NLR nodes to 7.

SCOOP Highlights FOCUS: Storm Surge, Waves, and Surface Currents Funds Allocated – FY03: $1,074,000 (ONR) FY04: $2,884,000 (ONR) & $1,949,217 (NOAA) FY05: $2,400,000 (ONR) & $ TBD … (NOAA) SCOOP Partners – Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE) Gulf of Maine Ocean Observation System (GoMOOS) Louisiana State University Southeast Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (SEACOOS) Texas A&M University University of Alabama at Huntsville University of Delaware (Mid-Atlantic Regional Association (MARA) University of Florida University of Miami University of North Carolina Virginia Institute of Marine Science … ever expanding …
