Mailboxes in France Mailboxes in France are yellow and can be found almost everywhere. You’ll see them along sidewalks, in squares, attached to walls and, of course, at the post office. Collection times are indicated on each box right next to the graffiti. The slot for foreign destinations is marked by the word etranger.

Where to buy Stamps Stamps (timbres) can be bought in tobacco shops (tabac) — located nearly everywhere and identified by a red or orange elongated diamond — or in post offices. Post offices are open from approximately 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturday mornings. In Paris, the post office at 52, rue du Louvre (tel ) is never closed. It’s the only post office in France open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, which makes it a meeting place for many tourists. If you’re lonely, stop by the post office.

Bought too much stuff? Not to worry! Sending packages home is convenient and reliable from post offices. Sturdy shipping boxes are available in all sizes at a moderate cost. In addition, many shops and all major department stores will send goods home (of course, they do charge you for that).
