The Cold War: Eisenhower Ch 13.4

Friday, May 11, 2012 Understand the effects of the “new look” policy, Massive Retaliation, the U-2 incident and Sputnik on the Cold War.

Eisenhower’s New Look Eisenhower wanted “more bang for the buck” in the military. He emphasized a smaller Army and a larger Nuclear arsenal.

Think About it… Why does no one win a Nuclear War?

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) Fear of massive retaliation stopped both sides from using their Nuclear weapons.

U-2 incident The United States sent the U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union. The Soviets shot down the U-2 and captured pilot Francis Gary Powers.

Cold War: Space Race Quotes From the Washington Post (Jan. 28 th 1958) The Air Force’s top space expert predicted yesterday the moon will be a military rocket base for either Russia or the US within 10 years. Brig. Gen. Homer A. Boushey, deputy director of Air Force research and Development said the moon will provide a “base of unequaled advantage” for raining “sure and massive destruction” on earth. The General said “he fully supports the view that ‘He who controls the moon, controls the Earth.’” -Brig. Gen. Homer A. Boushey

The Sputnik Crisis The Soviets launched Sputnik, the world’s first satellite in Space.

CIA The gov’t created the Central Intelligence Agency for containment in developing nations.

Military Industrial Complex Eisenhower warned the American people as he left office to be careful of the influence of the defense industry on military spending.

NASA’s part of the Federal Budget

NASA Congress responded by creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to compete with the Soviet Union.
