SDMX and DDI working together Technical workshop, Luxembourg, June 2013 Use cases for DDI and SDMX
SDMX-DDI dialogue (1/2) Launched in 2010 by METIS working group with 3 goals: To avoid duplication of effort by the two standards, and thus avoid confusion about which standards should be used for specific types of applications To provide reassurance to the user communities of both DDI and SDMX that the end-to-end statistical process can be managed, and that the standards bodies are both considering the needs of users in this area To provide specific technical guidance about the use cases and implementation of the standards for specific purposes Endorsed by DDI Alliance in 2011 and SDMX Sponsors Group in 2012
SDMX-DDI dialogue (2/2) Several business cases identified by a dedicated task team Internal Interoperability Support for end-to-end statistical production process Tabulation of aggregates from micro-data Disseminating "active" metadata from earlier phases as reference metadata "Drill back" from aggregates to micro-data (and repeatable/reusable processes defined using active metadata) External Interoperability Discovering, accessing and using "aggregate data plus associated metadata" in either SDMX or DDI form Publishing content standards Interoperability (and sharability) of methodological and IT solutions
Use cases (1/2) Survey data collection Representation of questionnaires Representation of survey data Administrative & register data Representation register records Transactions on registers Reference environment for the combined use of DDI and SDMX Setup of an integrated environment for handling micro-data and further aggregations using the appropriate standard Feasibility of a standard-agnostic metadata repository and registry which could manage metadata compliant with different standards, such as (but not only) SDMX and DDI
Use cases (2/2) Statistical micro-data access and on-demand tabulation of micro-data Exploration whether the documentation and access to micro-data made available from Eurostat for research purposes would be improved by the use of DDI Relevance of DDI in the context of remote execution environments Metadata and quality reporting Population of ESMS and ESQRS metadata reports with the contents of DDI instances
