Introducing, Citing, and Explaining Text Evidence Introduce your quote: Make sure that even someone who hasn’t read this book could still understand your quote. Who is speaking? What is going on? This information will give the reader context – an understanding of the situation. Cite your quote: Remember to use quotation marks and include a page number in parenthesis. Explain your quote: Explain what this quote means. How does it prove your point or support your claim? EXAMPLE: The Bluest Eye talks about childhood and the loss of innocence. For example, “I don’t want to be ruined.”

After you have a quote… Share your quote with a partner, and write on the back of your hand-out: 1) The name of the person you talked to 2) One thing you learned about their book

Bell Ringer: Thursday, March 5, 2015 Objective(s): Identify types of pronouns; read & comprehend text Essays are past due and losing 5 points per day! Directions: Copy the following sentence and circle the pronouns, adding commas if necessary. If someone smiles at you give him or her a smile in return. Everyone should do what he or she can to help so that the project can be completed on time.

Independent Reading – Creative Project Directions: You have been given the job of taking your book from the page to the big screen! You must write a script for one pivotal scene/event in the book, or alternatively choose to write a new scene (using the same story and the same characters, of course). Your script must include the following: A brief introduction of your scene or event. You must provide the context for the scene – explain who the characters are, and what is happening, and a brief claim in which you state why you believe this is an especially important or pivotal part of your book. If you choose to write a new scene, you must explain why you made this choice – how the new material adds to or improves the story. One or two quotes from your book. You should not use more than two quotes – the rest of the dialogue should be your own creation!

Essays Pick an area of improvement to write on your folder I will turn my essay in on time. I will turn in an essay that is complete (has an introduction, a claim, body paragraphs, and a conclusion). I will avoid using run-on sentences. I will use words that are clear and specific, staying away from words like “things” and “stuff.” I will introduce and explain in detail each piece of textual evidence I use in my essay.
