Informative Essay How does the form an author chooses to write in affect the author’s message?

The Purpose  The purpose of an informative essay, sometimes called an expository essay, is to educate on a certain topic.essay  It is not for giving an opinion or convincing someone to do something or change his beliefs.  In addition to being informative, it needs to be interesting.

The Basic Structure  The basic structure of an informative essay is very simple. It needs to have a beginning, middle, and end.  The beginning needs to present the topic and grab the attention of the audience. It needs to include the focus sentence for the entire essay.  The middle will be the main bulk of the essay and it will contain all the important facts that you are covering. This is where the audience will get their questions answered. Remember to answer these questions: who, what, where, when, why, and how.  The end is a conclusion where you will summarize the essay. It should spur the reader or listener to learn more about the topic.

What is my topic?  Answer the question: “How does the form an author chooses to write in affect the author’s message?”  Topic: Form impacts how we receive a message.  What kind of forms, or writing styles, are their?  How does it impact the message?  Why does it impact the message?  Can the author’s choice be wrong?

Topic: Form impacts how we receive a message  Topic: Form impacts how we receive a message.  What kind of forms, or writing styles, are their?  Journal, Screenplay, Short Story, Poem  How does it impact the message?  Creates mood, Impacts our beliefs about the character  Why does it impact the message?  Ex. Out, Out: tragedy turned into beauty through figurative language  Can the author’s choice be wrong?

What goes in my introduction?  Hook: Authors make choices long before they put pen to paper.  Background: When an author has a story to tell, they must choose what format to write it in. There are many styles to choose from, such as journal, poem, novel, even screenplay.  Thesis: The form an author chooses to write in will impact the way the audience receives the message.

Body Paragraphs: Monster  Topic Sentence: Walter Dean Myer took a chance on using two different kinds of writing styles to present the story of a young, inner city boy who was on trial for felony murder.  What kind of style did he use: He uses both a journal format, as well as a screenplay format.  Why: He does this to show the audience that the character cannot internalize what is happening to him.  Quote/ Example: Myers uses the journal to let the audience see that our character is human and has real feeling. When the protagonist writes about his little brother, “I like the last scene in the movie, the one between me and Jerry. It makes me look like a real person”, we see his softer side (Myers, 60).  Did it work?: If the author had only written in a screenplay format, we would have not gotten this deep insight into the characters emotions.

Body Paragraph: Flowers for Algernon  Topic Sentence:  What kind of style did he use  Why:  Quote/ Example:  Did it work?:

Body Paragraph: “Out, Out”  Topic Sentence  What kind of style did he use  Why:  Quote/ Example:  Did it work?:  (Frost,

Conclusion:  Restate Thesis:  Summarize your three main points:  Closure Sentence:
