Allegory Repetition of the same or similar consonant sounds Story or poem in which characters or events stand for or symbolize real people, events, or abstract ideas

Alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds Repetition of vowel sounds

Ambiguity Deliberately suggesting two or more meanings Reference to someone or something known from outside of the work

Anecdote This guy pulled over to help me change my flat tire. Which seems like a nice thing, but he took over instead of helping. After he was finished, I thanked him, let him leave, and then I unloosed the lug nuts again. I had to fix his mistakes. I hate when people think they know more than me because I am a female. A struggle between opposing forces or characters.

Internal Conflict The ice kept me from driving to work. My depression kept me from getting out of bed.

Epanalepsis Common sense is not so common A way of speaking that is characteristic of a certain geographical area, often confused for “accent”.

Farce Spaceballs, The Hangover, The Bridesmaids A short story which teaches a lesson on how to succeed in life.

Foil A character who can only be described in a few words, doesn’t change, one dimensional Acts as a contrast to the protagonist, a mirror, a reflection of the character traits.
