NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS NSP Staff at 18 years old

NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS Beloit College-The Mindset List Class of 2018 They have no memory of George Stephanopoulos as a senior White House advisor Their collection of U.S. quarters has always celebrated individual states During their initial weeks of kindergarten, they were upset by repeated images of planes blasting into the World Trade Center When they see wire-rimmed glasses, they think Harry Potter, not John Lennon Celebrity “selfies” are far cooler than autographs Bill Gates has always been the richest man in the U.S. Note: Most incoming students were born in 1997 or 1998

NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS Transitioning to RU In groups, brainstorm issues, topics or challenges students may experience as they transition to RU

NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS Potential Concerns Brainstorm situations where a PI may want to talk to their FI about something that isn’t going right, but is afraid to.

NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS Potential Concerns FI too chatty. PI doesn’t feel he/she has a voice PI given too much or too little responsibility Be mindful of times PI is busy (midterms, big projects, papers, etc.) Lack of communication No clear responsibilities Ice breakers/team builders Attendance Grading Lessons-who is doing what part Different teaching styles Go with the flow, or Planned and organized

NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS Ways to Ensure a Beautiful Partnership Be honest with your PI about your teaching style Weekly meetings Time to plan and communicate clearly FI and PI should leave knowing their “to-do’s” Have a plan A, B, C (and maybe even D) Check-in with your PI What do you want to gain from this experience? How are you feeling? Getting enough “spotlight” time in the classroom? Any concerns? What can we BOTH do to a come to a compromise? Draw from one another’s experiences
