From the 16 th -19 th centuries most marriages were arranged The two people getting married had no say in who they married –it was their parents and relatives The primary purpose of marriage, especially among the upper class, was to transfer property and forge alliances between extended family networks People used the term family to refer to all of the people living in one house, including servants as well as parents, children, and other “blood” relations

Those who belonged to the lower strata of society and those who were poor and “non important” were given the freedom to choose their own spouse The 1500’s gave rise to a large number of secret marriages (not being witnessed or under a religious ceremony) Not considered legitimate by the court DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR????!!!?
