ARE BEAUTY CONTESTS HARMFUL?

False teeth to hide baby teeth VOCABULARY Pageant Competition Showcase Exhibition Minority Related to money Teen Teenager Flippers False teeth to hide baby teeth

MEANING A beauty pageant or beauty contest is a competition that mainly focuses on the physical beauty of its contestants, although such contests also incorporate personality, intelligence, talent, and answers to judges' questions as judged criteria.

THE GOOD AND BAD OF BEAUTY CONTESTS Helps build confidence Objectifies young women Improves public speaking  Causes issues with body image Promotes social good/charity The bathing suit competition (need we say more?) Scholarships Spotlights only one kind of beauty  Showcases your talents

Critics say, It is mostly based on the physical beauty of all contestants Its a parade of female bodies Beauty contests promote an ideal of female beauty to which only a minority of women can realistically aspire

Judging women, but not men, primarily on their looks contributes to the subjugation of women because other qualities such as intelligence, are not seen as part of ideal feminity and there fore, not as things to which women should aspire.

HOW DO CHILD BEAUTY PAGEANTS AFFECT A CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT? EXTERNAL VS. INTERNAL VALUES Beauty pageants stress looks, glamour and, often, provocative attire

POSSIBLE EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS it's not uncommon for teens who used to be in pageants to develop eating disorders and have body image problems.

FINANCIAL STRAIN Beauty pageants are expensive, and some parents use money that could be spent on education

SEXUALIZES THEM Young girls who compete in pageants often look sexy by wearing makeup, hair extensions, “flippers” , revealing outfits and by learning provocative poses and moves
