The Western A Genre Study

Beginning Conflict between settlers moving west and the frontier Civilization – East Lawlessness - West

Themes Whites’ mission was to settle the West. Native Americans were seen as primitive and / or savage. Strong racism toward the Native Americans – Things said about them – How they and their culture were shown – White actors playing NAs (with shoe polish on faces to make them look “darker”)

Iconography Images / items / ideas that happen throughout a genre They may be slightly different from film to film, but the basic idea is the same.
