Struggle for rights During the 19th century some women began to agitate for the right to vote and participate in government and law making Women struggled for equal pay for equal work The birth control movement argued that women should have control over their reproduction and the movement had close ties to the feminist movement Widespread acceptance of rape and sexual enslavement of women as intrinsic part of war Women and girls often faced gender-based discrimination that puts them at increased risk of poverty, violence, ill health and a poor education

How did the government respond? In 1946 the United Nations established Commission on the Status of Women World Conference of the International Women's These conferences created an international forum for women's rights They also illustrated divisions between women of different cultures and the difficulties of attempting to apply principles universally In America the law states now states that "employers may not pay unequal wages to men and women who perform jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort and responsibility, and that are performed under similar working conditions within the same establishment."
