THE DESIGN PROCESS Design Brief: Conduct a questionnaire or interview with the client to get the design brief. Research: Conduct research focused on the industry itself, on its history, and on its competitors. Reference: Conduct research into logo designs that have been successful and current styles and trends that may be related to the design brief. Sketching and Conceptualizing: Develop the logo design concept(s) around the brief and research. Reflection: Take breaks throughout the design process. This lets your ideas mature and helps you get renewed enthusiasm and receive feedback. Presentation: Choose to present only a select few logos to the client or a whole collection. EFFECTIVE DESIGN

GRADING CRITERIA Is/does your project -Simple? Clear and easy to read? -Memorable? -Incorporate 1-2 symbols that represent you + your initials or your name? -Clean and well-crafted?

GRAPHIC DESIGN 19/13 Good afternoon! Please get your name card Today we start logo designs!

CONCEPT BOARD Your mission: Create a concept board that shows your design process for your personal logo. Include: -At least 5 examples of symbols you could use to identify yourself -Choose 1-2 of these symbols to represent you -Create 3 sketches of ideas for logos (remember to use your name or initials too!) -Sketch 2 different ideas for logos on graph paper -*Get feedback on your designs* -Choose 1 idea for a final design -Include ideas for your color palette

INSPIRATION Choose at least 5 symbols you could use to represent you You can draw these, print them from the computer, find them in a magazine, etc.

CREATE 3 IDEA SKETCHES -Thumbnails -Use 1-2 symbols + your name or initials -Play with composition, typography, line and shape

FINAL SKETCHES Create 2 final sketches on graph paper Get feedback from someone in class. Write down their feedback on your graph paper. Use this feedback to create a sketch of your final design.

GOOD VS BAD LOGOS

SIMPLE AND CHEAP

One of the main priorities is to make a logo use the least amount of different colors and the least amount of ink the save the company money on printing costs (for example) when making large billboards Good Bad

NEGATIVE SPACE – THE SPACE AROUND YOUR DESIGN (OR, THE SPACE THAT ISN’T STUFF)

Hidden Negative Space Showing something about the company Also the use of Negative space to Save $ on The logo

POPULAR AND MEMORABLE

You want the logos to be recognizable from any angle and only if a bit is seen so when a person sees the logo the product of the company into the mind This usually develops with popularity

AFTER THE LOGO IS OUT THERE YOU CAN’T EXPLAIN IT LIKE A PIECE OF ART

Use simple ideas. If you put too much information in a logo you might confuse people.
