Efficiency

Who is using CAT Tools? 88% of respondents use at least one CAT tool for at least some of their translation tasks. Of those using CAT tools, 76% use more than one CAT tool. Of those using CAT tools, 83% use a CAT tool for most or all of their translation work. Of those using CAT tools, 64% have been using one for upwards of three years now, and 23% have been using one for more than seven years.

Translation Memory A translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence- like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”.translators (source: Wikipedia)

Makes sure that translators need not translate similar or identical sentences more than once. What does a TM do? Moja djevojka ima novi crveni bicikl. Moja djevojka ima novi crni bicikl. My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle. Translation Memory My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle.

Each unit of text in the original and target language is stored in a database (....After it has been confirmed by the translator.) When the translator starts working on a new unit, the software automatically searches for similar units in the database and suggests hits. Similarity is computed on the basis of string comparison (surface level). Usually only hits above a certain threshold will be offered (default 70 %). 100 % = exact match 99 – 70 % = fuzzy match < 70 % = no match How does a TM work?

Basic idea: repetition Suitable for certain text types: user manuals, technical descriptions, business reports, legal texts etc. Unsuitable for: literary, newpaper, academic texts etc. How does a TM work?
