The Dawn of the Civil War Harper’s Ferry, Lincoln’s Election, Southern Secession

Harper’s Ferry God’s angry man was planning a slave revolt. Brown planned on raiding the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia and distributing the arms to the slaves in the area to start a slave uprising. With 21 men, Brown failed.

Brown’s Hanging Brown was captured by U.S. Marines commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee and turned over to Virginia and tried to treason. Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859.

Quick Write In your notebooks, write about the reactions that the north and the south may have had to the hanging of John Brown.

Lincoln is Elected President Lincoln received the Republican nomination because he was a moderate when it came to slavery. The south didn’t even put him on the ballot.

Southern Secession Lincoln’s Presidency was the final thing that happened before the South seceded. They felt that they had lost all voice in the federal government. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas had all left the union. The Confederate States of America was formed, recognizing slavery in all territories.
