Define a Team Theme Most presentations serve one or more of these purposes: To inform or instruct the audience about something To persuade or convince the audience to accept a proposal or idea To entertain the audience 5

Identify Specific Segments Arrange the following in the correct order. ____ Assign each segment to a specific speaker. ____ Examine the content of your presentation and decide at which logical points the information can be segmented. ____Check that all segments support the team theme. ____Confirm the sequence of speakers. ____ Decide how much time each speaker should spend on his/her segment. ____ Ensure that there are neither glaring gaps nor overlaps in the information presented by each speaker

Prepare Visual Aids 5 features of good PowerPoint slides A good introductory slide presents an overview of the entire team’s presentation. Good slides use a consistent design template to show that the presentation is a team effort. Good slides use appropriate diagrams to explain technical details. Techniques to get attention/interest of audience: posing a question making a startling statement or interesting fact using a humorous story or anecdote appropriate to the topic 13

Examples for seamless transition between speakers: “I have just elaborated on (main point just covered). Now, my teammate, (name of following speaker), will tell you more about (main point to be covered)” at the close of one part. Or, the speaker who follows after another can say something like “Thank you (name of preceding speaker) for discussing (main point(s) of preceding speaker). I will now elaborate on (main point to be covered). 14

Handling of Question-and-answer Sessions All team members should: –know more about the topic than what is presented –anticipate areas where questions may arise and prepare suitable answers –listen carefully to each question 19

Handling of Question-and-answer Sessions The team leader should: –start and end the session –decide who in the audience is to ask a question –repeat or rephrase the question for everyone to hear –decide who in the team is to answer a question 20

Handling of Question-and-answer Sessions –direct long-winded members of the audience to get to the point –avoid letting one member of the audience dominate the session 21

When answering questions during question-and- answer session, all team members should: think before answering remember the team focus for the presentation use clear and accurate language come to the point be honest and polite 22

ICA 1: TEAM DYNAMICS (20 MARKS - GROUPWORK) Objectives: To encourage cooperation among classmates and help you come together as a team, You can gather together concepts on ‘Team Dynamics’ into a practical experience and it is also hoped that you will become more comfortable with the idea of introducing, leading and presenting an activity in class. Description: Your tutor will divide the class into 4 teams. You should give yourselves opportunities to work with different people for different assignments throughout this semester. Each member in your team should have a role to play and must take up a ‘position’ which gives him sufficient speaking and presentation opportunities. 25

Part 1: Team-building activity In your team, run a team-building activity in class (or other suitable areas in campus) to achieve at least one of the following objectives:- to encourage cooperation among students/ help them come together as a team to show that everyone contributes to the team’s success to show that skills in speaking, questioning, listening are important to team performance others, please specify Make sure that each team in the class presents a different activity. Part 2: Debrief Before you run the activity, you need to present and give clear instructions on how the class can participate. After the activity, give a debrief. You debrief should cover objective(s) achieved and learning points and concepts shown by your activity. You are given 16 minutes to run the team-building activity and give the debrief. You should allocate sufficient time (at least 4 minutes) for the debrief. To be done in Wk 3 on Wed 6 May or Fri 8 May. Before you run the activity, you need to present and give clear instructions on how the class can participate. After the activity, give a debrief. You debrief should cover objective(s) achieved and learning points and concepts shown by your activity. You are given 16 minutes to run the team-building activity and give the debrief. You should allocate sufficient time (at least 4 minutes) for the debrief. To be done in Wk 3 on Wed 6 May or Fri 8 May. 27
