ACADEMIC WRITING I March 18, 2014

Today Introduction to textbook (North Star Reading & Writing) Introduction to reading skills: - Skimming - Scanning

Unit 1, pp With a partner, discuss: 1. What kinds of activities you see in this unit. 2. Which activities look most useful for you. 3. Which activities look difficult to you.

Information Some kinds of information you can get from reading something: The topic - The broad, overall message or general theme. The main idea (s) - the key concept (or concepts) being expressed. Details - Specific information (major and minor). - These support the main idea by telling the reader: how, what, when, where, why, etc.

Skimming Reading the material quickly. Trying to get a GENERAL sense of the ideas, information, or topic. ”Fast” reading. - When skimming, you do not read each word.

Skimming Examples: - You quickly read a 20-page report in a few minutes, and determine the overall topic and a few major points or ideas.

Skimming Examples: - You pick up the newspaper in the doctor's office, read through the first few pages, and get the basic idea of the events happening in the world.

Skimming - Can be useful for: - Previewing a text. - Get a general outline of a text. - Reading something when you have little time. - Determining is something is useful to you or not.

Skimming Some strategies for skimming: Read the first and last paragraphs of a document. Look for headings, titles, summaries, and other organizers throughout the text. Look at illustrations and charts. Read the first sentence of each paragraph (consider reading the last sentence, too).

Skimming Source:

Skimming practice 1 Pre-reading: Who is in this picture? What do you know about him? What do you know about his company?

Skimming practice 1 Read only the first sentence of each paragraph (2 sentences in total). You have 15 seconds. Go Now, discuss this article with a partner. - What is this article about? - What kind of information do you think is given in this article?

- What is this article about? - Facebook company - Facebook stock - CEO’s (MZ) behavior - What kind of information do you think is given in this article - Negative information about MZ’s behavior/dress - Stock’s value is rising

Scanning Reading to find specific information. When you scan, you move your eyes over the text to “pull out” specific words, phrases, or data. Usually, you know what you are looking for BEFORE reading (i.e., a test question), so you concentrate on finding the information.

Scanning Examples: - You look through the dictionary to find a specific word.

Scanning Examples: - You read through an accounting report to find a particular set of data.

Scanning Examples: - You look at the E-Mart flyers and look for a sale for 참외.

Scanning Examples: - Looking for the price of Coke in the flyers.

Scanning Can be useful for: - Finding the answer to a question. - Finding important information. - Reading tables and graphs.

Scanning Some strategies for scanning: Look for the author’s use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words ”first”, “second”, or “next”. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Look for key words mentioned in a question. i.e., “What does IPO mean?”

Scanning practice 1 Find the following information: 1. What is a hoodie? 2. What does “IPO” mean? 3. What does Michael Pachter think about Mark Zuckerberg’s style? 4. How much money is Facebook’s IPO expected to raise?

Problems selling products in other countries - Cultural differences - Differences in language - Ingredients - preferences

p. 7: With a partner Step 1: Discuss #1. (Choose a food from Korea that could be popular in another country. Give reasons to support your choice). - Take notes form your discussion! Step 2: Write a paragraph together based on your discussion.

p.7: With a partner Step 1 (notes): Food: ho ddeokWhere: Canada Reasons: Canadians like sweet fried foods - ho ddeok is warm, so it would be good in Canadian winters - It can be sold on the street; street food is popular in Canadian cities Step 2: Write a paragraph together based on your discussion. i.e., Ho ddeok could be a popular food in Canada. Canadians enjoy sweet fried foods, and ho ddeok fits that description. Ho ddeok is…
