The Staff Association is, first and foremost, the "voice" of EMBL employees. Opinions and concerns of the staff are presented to the Administration or EMBL Council through this channel. You are! The word "staff" in Staff Association refers to all categories of employees, from ancillaries to group leaders, technicians to predocs and postdocs. In short, anyone with an EMBL contract of more than three months who is not from an outside firm is a automatically a member of the Staff Association. The word "staff" should not to be confused with the term "staff member", which is a special category of employee normally receiving a fixed-term contract. Members also include all EMBL pensioners. The [Staff] Association is independent of governments, employers, political parties, trade unions and religious bodies. Statues of the EMBL Staff Association Do you need to discuss something confidentially? Contact any member of the Staff Association Committee. All matters will be treated confidentially. General opinions and concerns that you have can also be presented to the Administration or EMBL Council through this channel. The Staff Association is involved in changes of policy and administrative affairs that directly affect all members of personnel. The Staff Association Committee meets weekly to discuss topical issues from policy changes, health, pension and long- term care insurances to child-care. At the meetings, the local representatives from each unit discuss any hot topics by video conference. After the EMBL-wide conference, we discuss local issues amongst the local representatives. Our work for you! The Staff Association receives an annual budget to support its activities. A portion of this money is available for subsidising clubs and general social events within EMBL by up to 50%. We support you in Hamburg with the…  Organization of clubs e.g. Squash Club: Every 9 p.m. Contact: Arjen & Nabil  Organization of events Our policies for funding clubs and events: All invoices from providers are charged at net cost as long as they are paid from our budget (and the VAT amount is over 25 Euros). Even if we are not able to provide a subsidy, this would save on the cost of the activity. The amount of subsidy we can provide to EMBL clubs and other activities, will be decided on an case-by-case basis. The key is that it must be open to all staff at EMBL Hamburg. We can always support your club or activity by purchasing equipment as long as it is available to everyone.
