humans facing sakai mark notess / indiana university

“Have you talked to USERS of Sakai?” ―anonymous frustrated user

the case graduate distance class at IU, w/14 students (including me), Spring 2006 social sciences content, with a textbook, other readings, online activities, written assignments, and multiple-choice quizzes course newly migrated to Sakai (Oncourse CL) from older tools instructor –8 years’ online teaching experience –attended Oncourse CL training – enthusiastic –was also teaching 2 other online classes (sans Sakai)

some survey comments This form of discussion is very difficult to move from one posting to another as well as to keep track of which posting have been read. The discussion forum was slow and clumsy. Almost anything (even ) would have been better. The old Oncourse was good for the flow of dialog between the members. The professor also seemed to be able to come in and discuss more with the whole class. The old Oncourse was much easier to navigate and understand! Oncourse CL is the worst I’ve used. It isn’t really ready yet.

So.....it's so technologically overwhelming, there's so many bells and whistles, but the 10% of the stuff that most faculty use doesn't work well, and there's this extra 90% of the stuff that most of us just don't care about, or maybe as time went on we'd come to care about it, but the basic stuff was so, so difficult… – a frustrated instructor instructor comments

unweblike (can’t use back button) too much scrolling, too many scroll bars too slow (discussion, test & survey) confusing (layout, labeling, disorientation, inconsistency) redo UI to fix these!
