Unit 3: Computer Systems OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in IT
Do you know what’s under the bonnet of a car? What’s under the bonnet?
Do you know what’s inside your computer? Like a car, you can open it up and see what’s inside that makes it work
So what’s really inside? CPU: microprocessor able to carry out calculations Motherboard: the foundation for all the other components Sound and graphics cards: enable your computer to play sounds and display graphics Storage drives: hard drive, solid state (no moving parts), optical storage (CD/DVD ROM) Memory: ROM (read only) and RAM (which the computer can write to)
With a car, you can add parts to make it look better or go faster…. Is that enough? …with a computer you can add different chips, cards, software or hardware to improve its performance.
What will you learn? After completing this unit you will: Understand the components of computer systems Be able to recommend computer systems for a business purpose Be able to set up and maintain computer systems
