Toad [click mouse]

How are animals able to survive in the wild? Animals have certain adaptations that help them to survive. [click mouse]

How do you dress in the winter? You wear warm clothes to protect yourself from the weather. [click mouse]

What if you are having a snowball fight? You probably run away if someone is hitting you with snowballs! [click mouse]

The way you dress in the winter, and if you run and hide from someone throwing snow at you are kinds of … Adaptations. [click mouse]

We can separate adaptations into two categories: Physical AND Behavioral [click mouse]

Question: What are the two types of Adaptations? (to get the answer, click mouse) Answer: Physical and Behavioral click mouse

Physical adaptations are body shapes and colors that allow an animal to find food, defend itself, and to reproduce. Physical adaptations help an animal survive. Hey! I’m a walking stick. I look just like a stick you’d find on the ground. © A. Weinberg [click mouse]

Physical adaptation Camouflage (use of color in a surrounding) The chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings. Can you do that? [click mouse]

Mimicry (looking or sounding like another living organism) The Viceroy butterfly uses mimicry to look like the Monarch butterfly. Can you tell them apart? Poisonous Not poisonous Physical adaptation I’m the Monarch! I’m the Viceroy! [click mouse]

Question: What term means “to look or sound like another organism? (to get the answer, click mouse) Answer: Mimicry [click mouse]

Chemical defenses (like venom, ink, sprays) Physical adaptation [click mouse]

Body coverings & parts (claws, beaks, feet, armor plates, skulls, teeth) Physical adaptations The elephant’s trunk is a physical adaptation that helps it to clean itself, eat, drink, and to pick things up. [click mouse]

Now let’s learn about Behavioral Adaptations allow animals to respond to life needs. [click mouse] Behavioral Adaptations…

Each animal has methods of adapting by doing different actions. Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions. Flyinghibernating [click mouse]

Fill in the blank: _________ adaptations are animals’ actions they developed to survive. (to get the answer, click mouse) Answer: behavioral adaptations [click mouse]

We can divide Behavioral Adaptations into two groups: Instinctive Learned These behaviors happen naturally & don’t have to be learned. These behaviors must be taught. [click mouse]

Instinctive behaviors happen naturally & don’t need to be learned = Finding shelter Gathering & storing food Defending oneself Raising young Hibernating Migrating [click mouse]

Fill in the blank: Hibernating is an example of an ________ behavior. (to get the answer, click mouse) Answer: instinctive behavior [click mouse]

Learned behaviors Must be learned by experience, or taught to you by parents. = [click mouse]

animal adaptations. So to review... In this lesson, we have learned about animal adaptations. There are 2 ways to describe adaptations: Physicaland Behavioral [click mouse]

Physical adaptations are body structures. Some examples of physical adaptations are: Camouflage Mimicry Body coverings & parts Chemical defenses [click mouse]

Question: Name at least two physical adaptations (to get the answer, click mouse) Answer: - Camouflage - Mimicry - Chemical defense - Body covering and parts [click mouse]

Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions. Behavioral Adaptations can be [click mouse] Instinctive or Learned.
