NSF EAGER Mining NSF Database for Awards related to Tropical Pacific

Mining NSF Active Awards Took database dumps from September 17 through October 10 Searched for various keywords (Pacific, Fiji, Galapagos, etc). Greater than 2000 entries Eliminated grants not associated with Pacific Islands or tropical at-sea work Result is database of 182 grants worth over $441M of NSF funded activity

NSF Active Awards in the Pacific Of the 182 active awards, we found three broad categories: –Shipboard work: 79 awards totaling $393.6M –Aircraft work: 1 award totaling $61K –Island-based work: 102 awards totaling $47.5M

Shipboard Awards Significant funding for general ship operations and maintenance –Awards “clumped” on institutions who operate ships. –Most funding from GEO directorate Funding for specific projects –Wide variety of awardees

Island-based Awards We categorized each award as to whether it was specific to one Island or nation or whether it did work across a number of islands. We eliminated grants based in Hawaii that didn’t do work shipboard or on other Pacific Islands
