2 Capacity Planning Capacity is the upper limit or ceiling on the load that an operating unit can handle. The basic questions in capacity handling are: –What kind of capacity is needed? –How much is needed? –When is it needed?

7 Various Capacities Design capacity –Maximum obtainable output Effective capacity, expected variations –Maximum capacity subject to planned and expected variations such as maintenance, coffee breaks, scheduling conflicts. Actual output, unexpected variations and demand –Rate of output actually achieved--cannot exceed effective capacity. It is subject to random disruptions: machine break down, absenteeism, material shortages and most importantly the demand.

© Wiley Best Operating Level The Best Operating Level is the output that results in the lowest average unit cost Economies of Scale: Where the cost per unit of output drops as volume of output increases Spread the fixed costs of buildings & equipment over multiple units Diseconomies of Scale: Where the cost per unit rises as volume increases Often caused by congestion (overwhelming the process with too much work-in-process) and scheduling complexity

So process time of the system is 37.5 sec.  System capacity per hour is (1/37.5)*3,600 seconds = 96 sandwiches per hour  Process cycle time is = seconds
