Fresno City College Transfer Center

This session will cover: UC’s transfer record How transferring works – Transfer eligibility – UC-CCC course articulation – Transfer admission programs “Best advice” for prospective transfers Information resources

Transfer students earn GPAs comparable to those who entered as freshmen: – Transfer = 3.28 GPA – Freshmen = 3.32 GPA Transfer students graduate from UC at comparable rate to students who entered as freshmen: – Transfer = 82% graduate within 4 yrs of entry – Freshmen = 80% graduate within 6 yrs of entry UC’s Transfer Record

How Transferring Works Prospective Transfer Students should: Follow a curriculum based on selection criteria by campus – Major preparation coursework (strongly recommended for Biological/Physical Sciences and Engineering majors) – General education (breadth) or IGETC – Have a competitive cumulative grade point average

Who should consider transfer? Any student can benefit from starting his or her path to a UC degree at a California community college. Students should consider transfer if they: – Haven’t decided on vocational goals – Haven’t met freshman admission requirements – Aren’t ready or able to leave home – Want the affordability of community college courses – Want additional preparation or exploration in specific academic areas

Becoming Eligible 1. Complete 60 UC semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit – Earn 2.4 GPA in transferable courses 2. Meet UC minimum eligibility, plus the course pattern with C or better in each course - arts, humanities, social/behavioral, physical and biological sciences Students must complete TWO steps to establish eligibility:

Planning to Transfer? Questions asked by Counselors to students: “What is your transfer major?” “What college or university are you interested?”  California State University  University Of California  Private College/University “Do you have the 60 transferable units for transfer?” “Have you completed all your “major preparation?” “Have you completed the “Required Four” courses for the CSU?

Student Responses  “I am completing on my General Education.”  “I have the associate degree completed.”  “What are the “Golden Four courses?”

Bachelors Degree Bachelor’s Degree BA/BS 1. General Education Lower Division Freshman/Sophomore IGETC / CSU GE Can be taken at Community College Upper Division Junior/Senior 2. Major Requirements Lower Division Broad courses Fresh/Sophomore Courses taken at Community College Upper Division Specific courses Junior/Senior 3. Electives Goal: 60 transferable units

IGETC A specific pattern of courses that completes General Education courses after transferring from a California community college for most UC Schools and colleges. (see handout) IGETC is NOT an admission requirement. Do Not complete IGETC in lieu of the lower division major preparation. Try to satisfy both if you want to graduate in a timely manner.

UC-CCC Course Articulation Students should use ASSIST ( to find: – Transferable Course Agreements (TCAs) – Courses that fulfill major prep requirements – Courses that fulfill IGETC ASSIST Major Explorer also helps students research campuses and majors Transferable CCC courses are considered comparable to those offered to UC freshmen and sophomores (enrolling at CCC for ½ of the tuition rate) ASSIST.org - offers students road maps in preparing for specific majors at each UC campus

“Best Advice” for Prospective Transfers Research your options – Know which UC campus(es) and major(s) you want to target and which have transfer guarantee programs – Investigate which CCCs offer most transferable courses for prospective major(s) Decide on a major and campus by start of sophomore year at CCC – Follow recommended prep curriculum for major (including competitive GPA) – Be sure GE pattern you follow is appropriate for intended major, campus

Complete transferable math and English requirements early, preferably within first 30 units Complete transferable math and English requirements early, preferably within first 30 units Manage unit accumulation Attend full time, work part time and apply for financial aid visit the Transfer Center/Career Center Take advantage of student services offered by community college – visit the Transfer Center/Career Center Transfer Admission Guarantee Programs Participate in the Transfer Admission Guarantee Programs – see a counselor for more information. “Best Advice” for Prospective Transfers

Transfer Admission Programs The following UC campuses have TAG programs ( for more details visit your local community college Transfer Center): – UC Davis – UC Irvine – UC Merced – UC Riverside – UC San Diego – UC Santa Barbara – UC Santa Cruz

Resources for Major Preparation Use the “Exploring Majors” feature at to: Compare major prep requirements at different UC campuses Find which CCC offers the most courses required for UC major If courses aren’t articulated for specific major, check with UC campus to investigate options, what flexibility available ALSO: Read campus catalog descriptions of upper-division coursework – Best shorthand for understanding thrust of major, differences in approaches by campus
