Defining Genocide  International Community General term used to describe the interaction of states and how they cooperate together and resolve issues between them  State Sovereignty Absolute authority of the state to govern itself free of outside interference  Genocide convention This treaty made genocide a crime. All signers were to prevent, suppress, and punish genocide

Defining Genocide Continued  Nationalism Devotion to one’s nation  International Criminal Court the first permanent, treaty based, international criminal court established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.

Armenia Terms  Young Turks Gained power of the Ottoman Empire in Wanted to create a nation that was all Turkish  Armenians Christian Minority in the Ottoman Empire

Holocaust Terms  Nazi Political party in power in Germany during WWII. Led by Hitler  Anti-Semitism Hatred or discrimination against the Jewish community  Final Solution Plan by the Nazi’s to annihilate European Jews and all other “undesirables”

Bosnia Terms  Serbs Eastern Orthodox Led ethnic cleansing against Muslims and Croats  Croats Roman Catholic  Ethnic cleansing Forcibly remove one ethnic group from an area.  Often used instead of “genocide” when discussing Bosnia

Rwanda Terms  Somalia Syndrome Refers to when the US was in Somalia on a humanitarian mission. 18 American troops were killed and nearly a thousand Somali citizens. This changed America’s response to humanitarian crises, especially in Africa
