TITLE: Yeah God! Celebration is the Essence of Worship TEXT: Psalm 100 THEME: The believer should celebrate God because of who He is.

Worship is not some boring, noiseless gathering of dejected, tired people. It is a noisy celebration of praise for the awesome accomplishments of a great God.

Psalm Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his[a]; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Psalm Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

What should the believer’s response be to Gods goodness, love and faithfulness (v.5)

What should the believer’s response be to Gods goodness, love and faithfulness (v.5) He should celebrate God through:

I. Shouting for Joy (1)

The KJV translated this “make a joyful noise.”

I. Shouting for Joy (1) The KJV translated this “make a joyful noise.” Compare to Psalm 98:4-6, 95:1, 6:1

Psalm 98:4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn— shout for joy before the LORD, the King.

Psalm 95:2 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

Psalm 96:1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth

I. Shouting for Joy (1) The KJV translated this “make a joyful noise.” Compare to Psalm 98:4-6, 95:1, 6:1 This shout is like a loud shout of fanfare for a beloved king, or of a victorious general for his great victory, or for an athlete who has just won a great race. It is like saying, “Yeah God! Way to go. You’re are great!”

Habakkuk 2:20 “20 The LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.”

Way to go. You’re are great!” This a verse on the imminent and fearful judgment of God the people of Israel for their disobedience and idolatry.

Habakkuk 2:15-20 “15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies! 16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed[e]! The cup from the LORD’s right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory

Habakkuk 2:15-20 “17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and your destruction of animals will terrify you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

Habakkuk 2: “Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. 19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it.”

Habakkuk 2: The LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him

What should the believer’s response be to Gods goodness, love and faithfulness (v.5) He should celebrate God through:

II. Serving Him with Gladness (2)

The word worship here has the idea of service.

Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God— this is your true and proper worship.”

Serving Him with Gladness (2) The word worship here has the idea of service. In the KJV the last part is translated, “which is your reasonable service.” Worship and sacrifice go together.

II.Serving Him with Gladness (2) The word worship here has the idea of service. In the KJV the last part is translated, “which is your reasonable service.” Worship and sacrifice go together. There is no Greek or Hebrew word that parallels our English word for worship.

II. Serving Him with Gladness (2) The English word for worship comes from an Anglo-Saxon “worthship” and then was modified to worship.

II. Serving Him with Gladness (2) The English word for worship comes from an Anglo-Saxon “worthship” and then was modified to worship. Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare his worth. It attributes worth to someone or something.

Ronal Allen, Worship: The Missing Jewel, pg. 18. "Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare His worth. Worship is not passive; but is participative. Worship is not simply a mood; it is a response. Worship is not just a feeling; it is a declaration....”

Ronal Allen, Worship: The Missing Jewel, pg. 18. That's the missing jewel-worshiping God by ascribing to Him supreme worth, for He alone is worthy. Notice I did not say, "Worship Him by singing... worship Him by teaching." We ascribe to Him worth in our teaching, in our singing, and in our prayers. He alone is awesome. That's another word we've cheapened by attaching it to objects made by human hands. A car is not awesome. No movie is awesome. God alone is awesome. He brings out the wonder in me, which prompts me to search for ways to express His worth.

Ronal Allen, Worship: The Missing Jewel, pg. 18. Unfortunately most of us praise the preacher more than we praise our God. God alone is the subject of our praise and the object of our worship. We've lost that. We miss it when our horizontal focus becomes riveted on people and things, rather than on the vertical - on God. No wonder we are becoming a people full of worry rather than worship

Read Ronald Allen, “Worship The Missing Jewel ” pg. 18. “What, then, is essence of worship? It is the celebration of God! When we worship God, we celebrate Him: We extol him, we sound his praises, we boast in Him.”

What should the believer’s response be to Gods goodness, love and faithfulness (v.5) He should celebrate God through:

III. Knowing that He is God (3)

To “know” is to have a firm ground behind the command to shout for joy.

III. Knowing that He is God (3) To know is to have a firm ground behind the command to shout for joy. This knowledge is what gives us reason to celebrate God

III. Knowing that He is God (3) Two things we should know:

III. Knowing that He is God (3) Two things we should know: 1. He made us- We exist only because God caused us to exist. For the we should rejoice.

III. Knowing that He is God (3) Two things we should know: 1. He made us- We exist only because God caused us to exist. For the we should rejoice. 2. We are His

Keil and Delitsch “The Creator is also the owner- His heart clings to his creatures and the creature owes itself entirely to Him- without who we would not have being.”

Principle What we know intimately and revere, we resemble, either for ruin or restoration. To commit ourselves to some part of the creation more than the Creator is idolatry. And when we worship something in creation, we become like it, as spiritually lifeless and insensitive to God as a piece of wood, rock, or stone.”

What should the believer’s response be to Gods goodness, love and faithfulness (v.5) He should celebrate God through:

II. Entering into His presence (4) With thanksgiving

II. Entering into His presence (4) With thanksgiving With praise

In the OT the courts and temple were closed to the unclean. In the Old Testament God resided at the temple with the Shekinah glory that reside in the Holy of Holies. This verse has even greater meaning to New Testament believers.

John 4:19-24 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem

John 4: “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Hebrews 10:19-22 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Revelation 21:22 “I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.”

APPLICATION 1. While there are times that Worship should be serious and reflective it should not stay there. I should not depress us or be like a funeral- it should lead us to praise of celebration.

APPLICATION 2. We are commanded to do thee things- therefore worship is an act of the will to put aside the drudgery of life and focus on Gods goodness, love and faithfulness.

APPLICATION 3. I can celebrate God in even the worst of circumstances

APPLICATION 4. Authentic worship does not require years of faith. When new believers gain a new insight on the nature of God’s greatness they can worship Him.

Ben Patterson, "Resurrection and Pandemonium," LeadershipJournal.net Then came the resurrection. Pandemonium broke out this time, but for a different reason. The gathering had spontaneously erupted into a party. The noise now was of jubilation, and it was deafening. The people were dancing and slapping each other on the back. Christ is risen, indeed!

Ben Patterson, "Resurrection and Pandemonium," LeadershipJournal.net Again the missionary had to shut off the projector; this time he didn't tell them to calm down and wait for what was next. All that was supposed to happen—in the story and in their lives—was happening.
