Classroom Management “Managing a roomful of students succesfully is vital to improving achievement and satisfaction in the classroom”. (Robert L. DeBruyn, 2004)

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TASK 1 Find the other people who have the same number/situation as you. What strategy(ies) would you use to address this situation?

Workshop- Content Objectives Define the fundamental elements of Classroom Management. Recognize the reasons for negative classroom behavior. Analyze classroom behavior of students. Apply strategies to combat negative classroom behavior.

Workshop- Language Objectives Read and discuss example of student behavior in the classroom.

The Goal of Classroom Management Create an environment where learning proceeds without interruption. Reduces inappropriate behavior and the need to discipline. Let students know the rules and expectations, why they exist, and what appropriate behavior looks like.

Classroom Management CLASSROOM PROCEDURES & CUES CLASSROOM ROUTINES

Classroom Procedures Transitions between activities that make the class flow smoothly: Opening routine Distributing materials Passing out papers Pair/group work Cleaning the classroom Closing routine Activities Assessment Greeting

Classroom Cues Verbal and non-verbal signals Signal for getting students’ attention Signal for getting the teacher’s attention

Classroom routines 1. Set a routine Predictable Mechanical It allows students to focus on content.

Busy If you don’t assign your students a task, they will find something else to do! Make sure you don’t have too much down-time between activities! Interested Your students are more likely to act up when they are unengaged. Plan activities with their interests in mind. Also be observant while you teach and adjust your lesson to keep their attention. Assessed Give them a purpose. Let them know you are checking up on their completion of a task. B.I.A.

Tips: Voice Proximity Physical set-up of the classroom Show a balanced attitude when dealing with a discipline issue Be a model, show exactly what you expect Monitoring Positive reinforcement

Tips Continued: Always use positive statements: “I will begin when everyone is quiet” “Be respectful” “Please, listen carefully and attentively” “Food will be eaten outside of class” “Raise your hand, please”

“Numbered Heads Together” Which are the fundamental elements of CM? What is the main goal of CM? What are classroom procedures? Show me a cue. What does B.I.A. stand for? Why is routine important?
