“5-Minute Prep” For Human Body Systems of the Body DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Human Body Systems of the Body Muscular System

Muscular System – The Big Ideas The muscular system allows the body to move. Major types of muscles include voluntary and involuntary muscles. Muscles types are different throughout the body.

Muscular System – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of some systems of the body prior to this study. It will be helpful for students to use the Fun-damental, Building A Body, to review the Muscular System. It will also help if they are able to: Explain that the body is made up of systems. Understand the role of the skeleton in supporting the body.

Muscular System – Common Misconceptions Muscles are not found all over the body. Reality: There are three types of muscle: smooth, cardiac, and skeletal which account for over 600 muscles found throughout the entire body. If you stop exercising, your muscle will turn into fat. Reality: Muscle is made up of individual cells that undergo all kinds of complex metabolic processes. Fat cells are simply storage packets of lipids. One type of cell can not change into another type of cell.

Muscular System – Instructional Ideas Read the reading passage, Skeletal Muscles–Move That Body! Lead students in a game of Simon Says. As you play, point out muscles as they are used. (i.e. muscles in the face while smiling or frowning, the many muscles in the tongue while moving it, the leg muscles as you flex your foot, etc.)

Muscular System – Instructional Ideas Watch the Video Segment, Involuntary Muscular System. Teach students how to take their pulse. Explain that the pulse measures the number of times a person’s heart beats per minute. Record student pulse rates on a large piece of chart paper. Instruct students to march in place for 60 seconds and take their pulse again. Record student pulse rates in a second column on the chart. Compare the two pulse rates to show how the heart muscle works by beating faster when we move.
