Girl Scouts of the USA By KoriAnne Lucero

So what is Girl Scouts? Girl Scouts is a non-profit organization whose main focus is empowering girls and helping them develop to their full potential. Girl scouts is 3.2 million members strong. 890,000 of these members are adults. Girl Scouts of the USA helps todays girls become tomorrows leaders. Girl Scouts of the USA provides programming not only for girls in the US but also for girls living overseas. Girl Scouts is led by the CEO, Ana Maria Chávez, the National Board of Directors, volunteers and staff in over 100 councils nationwide.

The Girl Scout Mission Building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

The History of Girl Scouts Juliette Gordon Low founded GSUSA on March 12, 1912 after meeting Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts while living abroad. After returning home from living abroad, she phoned her cousin saying: "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!“ The organization has been successful for the past 102 years. More than 59 million American women enjoyed Girl Scouting during their childhood—and that number continues to grow as Girl Scouts of the USA continues to inspire, challenge, and empower girls everywhere.

In 2012, in order to create some sort of fine art to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting, Girl Scouts of Utah had the ‘100 Faces of Girl Scouting.’ Over 100 people showed up to be photographed for this historic event.

Where is Girl Scouts located?  GSUSA national headquarters is located in New York City, New York. There are 113 local councils located throughout the US. Girl Scouts of the USA can be accessed on a national scale online through girlscouts.org.  Girl Scouts, on a more local scale, has a shop and offices in Murray as well as offices in Riverdale and Spanish Fork and can be accessed online through gsutah.org.  Girl Scout World Centers are located in England, India, Mexico, and Switzerland.

Programs within Girl Scouts  -Journeys  Girls discover, connect, and take action.  -Awards  The three highest awards a girl can earn are the Bronze, Silver, and Gold.  -Travel  Girls and Troops can travel throughout the US and around the world. Girls can go through Girl Scout destinations, a program where girls participate in specific programming based off of the trip. There are destination opportunities in six continents. Troops often travel to the birthplace of founder Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia.

The Cookie Program The Girl Scout cookie program focuses on teaching girls five skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills, and Business Ethics. The first Non-commercial Girl Scout Cookies were sold in 1917 in order to finance troop activities. The Cookie program is the largest girl run business in the world.

The Camp and Outdoor Program Girl Scout camp is a great place for girls to build character, learn leadership skills, gain a sense of belonging, and most of all – have fun! Why are the outdoors important? 88% of children report using a computer every day, while only 11% of children report visiting a local park or natural area every day. 90% of children who spent time outside said being in nature and taking part in outdoor activities helped relieve stress. Spending time in Nature has proved to reduce behavioral problems and improve moods, attention spans, and short-term memory.

Girl Scouts of Utah has two beautiful camps: Camp Cloud Rim and Trefoil Ranch Cloud RimTrefoil Ranch

I have been a member of Girl Scouts for eight years. I’m currently a Girl Scout Senior. I have had the wonderful opportunity to be a spokesperson for Girl Scouts through the Miss Media Program. I have also been able to assist in planning summer camp for girls here in Utah. This summer I will be a CIT (counselor in training) at the summer camps in Utah. My Affiliation
