Important Dates o Signed into law August 3 rd, 1977 by Jimmy Carter o Amended in 1990 to allow funds to be used to reclaim mines abandoned after 1977

Why is this a thing? o Arose of out concern about the impacts of strip mining

Controversy o Mountain Top Mining and Valley fills

Basics of this law o Primary law that regulates effects of coal mining

Impacts o Restore AOC or approximate original contour of mined land o Avoid acid drainage into water reservoirs o Reclaim land o Grow vegetation in mined areas
