MILTON KEYNES TENANTS GROUP MEETING ACORN HOUSE Wednesday 27 th July 2011

REGENERATION Objectives of this session: To hear about a council service which actively and successfully encourages participation from tenants To understand the reasons behind the increase in tenants/residents involvement and whether lessons can be learned for the wider benefit of Milton Keynes. What is Regeneration? What does it mean to individual tenants living in different parts M.K.?

CONTEXT Outcomes from last years regeneration session Objectives from Tenants Planning Group Meeting on 15th June and two key themes emerging: –What is regeneration? –The importance and value of tenants who spend time in improving services and communities Relevance of this session to all tenants whether or not they live in one of the 6 x priority estates or 19 priority neighbourhoods identified in the councils regeneration strategy

LET’S LOOK AT Are expectations of tenants too high! What was said last year Why is it difficult to get tenants to participate?

Extract from last years issues: Some residents felt they were being expected to ‘run before they can walk’. Need to work at the right pace. Meetings should be run twice – once during the day and again in the evening – to maximise attendance. Too much reliance on the internet – not everyone has it! Verbal communication is best.

MKC Tenants Group Planning Session 15th June 2011 How to get interest from the community Importance of the timing of events Networking time lost through new Tenants Engagement Framework What has MKC learnt? What is Regeneration? ‘Hackney Shop’ example of good communication with residents

Continued……….Tenants Group Planning Session Importance of good communication between those working in an area, Council and residents and also between residents/volunteers. Perception from outside is that the framework/structures for engagement are good. From inside, they could be considerably improved. Importance of tenants who spend time contributing to improving their neighbourhoods/communities. How are we supporting individuals/groups and is it enough? Example of a successful volunteering group – successes, how difficulties have been overcome, blueprint for success?

INTRODUCTION TO ANGUS AND TEAM Picture?

PUT YOUR THINKING CAPS ON What one main thing would you like to see which would enhance your contribution? What are the others? What do you think stops or puts off tenants becoming involved? Where about in Milton Keynes do you live and what does ‘regeneration’ mean to you?

MILTON KEYNES TENANTS GROUP THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART
