Project Management & Microsoft Project

MS Project Task Types n nFixed Units, Fixed Duration, Fixed Work n nUsed to calculate duration of tasks and subsequently their finish dates n nDuration = Work / Units n nTask Type determines which piece of the equation will remain “fixed”, and which is calculated n nDefault is fixed units Task TypeIf you revise units...If you revise duration...If you revise work... Fixed UnitsDuration is recalculated.Work is recalculated.Duration is recalculated. Fixed WorkDuration is recalculated.Units are recalculated.Duration is recalculated. Fixed DurationWork is recalculated. Units are recalculated.

Effort-driven Scheduling n nAssigning or removing resources on a task changes duration or units based on the number of resources assigned – –Total work does not change n nWork is first calculated when assigning a resource to a task n nAfter resources are first assigned, Work does not change when adding or removing resources n nEffort-driven scheduling only takes effect when resources are added to or removed from a task n nEffort-driven scheduling is not applied when you change work, duration, or unit values for resources already assigned to a task n nFixed Duration, Amount of work distributed to the resources assigned changes n nFixed Units, Duration changes n nNot Effort-driven is default. Fixed Work is always effort-driven (cannot be changed). Task TypeIf you assign additional resources... Fixed UnitsDuration is shortened. Fixed WorkDuration is shortened. Fixed DurationDecreases the individual unit values for resources. For effort driven tasks:

Effects of Fixed Task Type Initial Tasks

Effects of Fixed Task Type Add Resources Before After

Effects of Fixed Task Type Increase Duration Before After

Effects of Fixed Task Type Increase Work Before After

Effects of Fixed Task Type Add Resources Before After

Effects of Fixed Task Type Reset Resources to Max Units Before After
