Relais Express Implementation in OCUL libraries in Canada ILL Discussion Group meeting, ALA Mary Lehane June 23, 2012

Relais Express Scanning & delivery system Scan documents to convert print into electronic format Attach existing e-documents to requests for delivery Send documents to your patrons via ‘post to web’, with attachment, fax, or print Send documents to other libraries that use Ariel or Odyssey Receive documents from other libraries that use Ariel or Odyssey An alternative to Ariel & Odyssey that is fully supported and upgraded each year Intelligent, Flexible, Open Solutions SHARING

Relais Express PLUS Network version of Relais Express Multiple workstations connect to a server workstation Share 1 database (e.g. patron & library records) Same functionality as Relais Express Each workstation needs an IP address Intelligent, Flexible, Open Solutions SHARING

Relais Express York University Resource Sharing Receives 1300 articles per year Supplies 3500 articles per year 5 libraries scan articles, main library sends all Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) 21 Universities 27,000 articles supplied in 2010/11

Relais Express OCUL working group investigated options for secure electronic delivery Needed a secure system to comply with Canadian copyright and Access Copyright requirements Pilot group tested and reported Spring 2011 Implementation is progressing; more than half installed, all to be completed by end of 2012

Relais Express Set-up varies across OCUL consortium Rolled out at York in conjunction with elimination of fees Users receive alerts that look like RACER interlibrary loan alerts.

Relais Express Room for improvement Standalone, like Ariel Receive and Send cannot operate at the same time; requires a second Receive FTP workstation (solved with Relais Plus) Manipulating documents (cropping, etc.) fixed in new version (being released soon) Logs cumbersome to view Main problem at individual sites: technical set-up and support
